The Future of Autonomous Surgical Robotics: Ethical and Regulatory Considerations

Abstract

Autonomous surgical robotics represent a transformative leap in medical technology, promising increased precision, reduced human error, and enhanced patient outcomes. However, their integration into clinical practice introduces complex ethical dilemmas and regulatory challenges. This paper examines the future of autonomous surgical robotics through a comprehensive exploration of the ethical imperatives and regulatory frameworks that govern their development and deployment. Through a systematic literature review and qualitative analysis, this study investigates the critical ethical questions regarding patient autonomy, informed consent, liability in adverse outcomes, and the broader impact on the surgeon–patient relationship. Additionally, the paper reviews existing regulatory paradigms, identifies gaps in oversight, and proposes potential pathways for harmonizing ethical practices with robust regulatory oversight. The findings underscore the need for a multidisciplinary approach that involves engineers, ethicists, clinicians, and policymakers to ensure that advancements in robotic surgery do not compromise patient safety or ethical standards.
